Legalizing U.S. Documents Before You Return to Vietnam
The 3-step process for legalizing U.S. documents for use in Vietnam: notarization, certification, and legalization at a Vietnamese representative office.

If you live in the U.S. and have documents you'll need in Vietnam, deal with them before you fly — that's the whole point of this article. Since 11 September 2026, U.S. documents can be accepted in Vietnam by two routes: an apostille, or consular legalization. Both start in the U.S., and neither can be done from Vietnam afterward.
Why is consular legalization needed?
Documents issued by U.S. authorities are not automatically valid in Vietnam. Consular legalization is the "bridge" that lets Vietnamese authorities trust and accept foreign documents in procedures such as marriage, birth registration, inheritance, real estate, or employment.
Two routes, differing at the last step
| Step | Apostille route | Consular legalization route |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Notarization or certification in the U.S., if that document needs it | Same |
| 2 | Certification by your state's Secretary of State (or the U.S. Department of State for federal documents) — this is the apostille | Same |
| 3 | Done. The document can be used in Vietnam, translated if required | One more step: legalization at a Vietnamese mission, then done |
The Apostille Convention has been in force for Vietnam since 11 September 2026. Consular legalization remains valid, and many receiving offices are more familiar with it — so the right question isn't "which route is newer" but "which form does the office in Vietnam want". Ask before you start, because redoing it from Vietnam always costs more.
Prepare before you go home
Complete the entire process while you're still in the U.S. Many steps (especially the Apostille) must be done in the U.S.; if you only start after returning to Vietnam, you'll have to ship the documents back, costing extra time and money.
