What is a Vietnam E-visa?

An E-visa is an electronic visa issued by Vietnam Immigration. It's emailed to you as a digital file — just print it and show it on arrival. No passport sticker and no consulate visit required.

Who needs an E-visa?

• Foreign nationals (including spouses and children of Vietnamese people) entering Vietnam.
• Overseas Vietnamese with a foreign passport who don't qualify for the 5-year visa exemption.
• Anyone traveling, doing business, or visiting family for a short stay.

If you're of Vietnamese origin or have a Vietnamese-citizen relative, see the 5-year visa exemption — usually more convenient and economical for repeat trips home.

Entry type & validity

• Single entry or multiple entry, depending on your needs.
• Valid for up to 90 days — you stay within that validity; each entry does not start a new 90 days.

Three common misunderstandings about "validity":

• Validity is not permitted length of stay. A 90-day visa is a 90-day window starting from the date it becomes valid; you must leave Vietnam before that window closes, rather than getting 90 days from whenever you fly.
• Single entry means one entry. Returning after a few days in Cambodia or Thailand counts as a new entry — you need to choose a multiple-entry visa when you apply.
• The start date is the one you declare, not the date it's granted. Declaring the wrong date means a fresh application; an issued visa can't be edited.

Documents to prepare

• A photo of your passport info page (valid at least 6 months on the date of entry).
• A portrait photo facing the camera, face clearly visible (any background — VietVisas fixes it).
• Basic trip details: planned arrival date and port of entry.

Why e-visa applications get refused or have to be redone

Most rejections aren't about eligibility. They're caused by small errors in the form and photos:

• A name that doesn't match the passport — surname and given name swapped, a middle name dropped, or Vietnamese diacritics added to a name that has none in a U.S. passport.
• One wrong character in the passport number — 0 and O are the classic pair.
• An unusable photo — blurred, underlit, glare from a flash, glasses, the top of the head or the chin cropped off, or a picture taken of a screen.
• An obscured passport page — a fingertip over a corner, a shadow across the machine-readable lines at the bottom, or an angled shot that curves the text.
• An arrival date too far out, or one that has already passed by the time the visa is granted.
• A port of entry that isn't the one you'll actually use.
• A passport with less than 6 months' validity on the date of entry.

Worth knowing: a fee already paid is generally not refunded when an application is refused — reapplying means paying it again. That's why we check every field before submitting.

Government fee vs service fee — which is which

Filing yourself on the official portal means paying the state fee. Under the current schedule (Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC, in force since 1 April 2026):

Filing it yourself? The official portal is evisa.gov.vn (also thithucdientu.gov.vn). Go to that address specifically — several lookalike sites charge many times the government fee.
